Awarding of the 2023 “Enzo Belardinelli” Doctoral Thesis Prize

On the occasion of the XLII Annual School of the National Bioengineering Group (GNB), held in Bressanone from September 11th to 14th, 2023, our PhD Giulia Baldazzi was awarded the prestigious “Enzo Belardinelli” Doctoral Thesis Prize (University of Bologna). This recognition is granted to PhD candidates from the XXXIV and XXXV cycles who have demonstrated research excellence within the fields of Engineering and Sciences at Italian Universities and Polytechnics.

The awarded thesis, titled “Advanced signal processing and machine learning tools for non-invasive foetal electrocardiography and intracardiac electrophysiology”, focuses on the integration of advanced Signal Processing and Machine Learning techniques applied to cardiac electrophysiology.

The research successfully addressed two critical challenges in the bioengineering sector:

  • Intracardiac Electrophysiology: the analysis of intracardiac signals in ventricular tachycardias, aimed at the optimal identification of ablation target points for arrhythmia treatment.
  • Non-invasive Fetal Electrocardiography: the development of algorithms for the accurate extraction of foetal electrophysiological signals from non-invasive acquisitions.

Citation by the National Bioengineering Group

The committee granted the award by emphasizing the methodological rigor and the highly innovative nature of the proposed approach. The work led to the development of novel signal processing tools and yielded results of significant scientific interest, establishing new frontiers in the monitoring and treatment of cardiac pathologies.
