Workshop – Assessment of Roadmap Progress – Towards a common experimental protocol for testing the carbon stability of hydrochar

ATB, Potsdam, Germany | July 17-18, 2025

Last update: 28 February 2026

The HTC-Network Workshop 2025 was held on 17–18 July 2025 at the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) in Potsdam, Germany.
The meeting brought together over 50 researchers and industry representatives from all over the world to discuss recent progress on the HTC-Roadmap, share ongoing research on biomass valorization, and develop a common experimental approach for assessing hydrochar carbon stability within carbon removal frameworks.

The workshop combined scientific presentations, laboratory visits, and interactive discussions, providing a highly engaging and productive setting for knowledge exchange. A field trip to Carbonauten GmbH in Eberswalde offered participants an opportunity to explore large-scale pyrolysis operations and discuss the practical challenges and opportunities of industrial hydrochar deployment.

Overall, the event represented a valuable step forward in aligning research efforts, harmonizing testing protocols, and strengthening collaboration within the international HTC community toward sustainable carbon management and circular bioeconomy solutions.
