Schelling’s Philosophy of Sleep:

Concept, Sources and Multidisciplinary Dialogue

A Research Project on Schelling’s works and sleep as a philosophical matter*

Overview

This project surveys the notion of sleep in the thought of the German philosopher F.W.J. Schelling, a key figure in the history of biology and Romantic medicine. Through a conceptual
analysis of his writings (especially of the period 1794-1815) and a philological reconstruction of his sources, the project aims at a better understanding of sleep from an historical-philosophical, ethical, and psychological perspective, and promotes major awareness of it at both academic and civil level.

SchellingSLEEP aims to achieve three main goals:

  1. To develop a deeper understanding of Schelling’s work by reassessing his sources and reconsidering his relationship to other thinkers of his time (e.g., the young Hegel);
  2. To offer a novel contribution to the history of Western science and medicine, and to their intersections with philosophical thought;
  3. To propose a new interdisciplinary approach to the phenomenon of sleep, grounded in philosophical analysis and engaging with fields such as anthropology, ethics, aesthetics, psychology, medicine, and the neurosciences.
