SMART STATE ESTIMATION

The project SMART STATE ESTIMATION – State estimation in a smart electrical grid, is centered on the definition of procedures, measures and communication infrastructures that are necessary for state estimation in the distribution part of a smart grid. This need finds its rationale on the fast-pacing changes that are taking place in the energy distribution network, such as distributed energy generation from renewable energies and the presence of non-linear loads. In such a context, the traditional control systems and static models are falling back.

The electrical grind of the future calls for an ICT infrastructure able to make it intelligent in the sense of allowing interactions with devices so as to allow the deployment of feasible protection and management systems. In light of the abovementioned requirements, the goals of this project are: definition of standard solutions for state estimation in an intelligent distribution network; study of various methodologies for measuring dynamic synchrophasors in order to accomplish smart state estimation and introduction of innovative solutions specifically for the smart grid; study and analysis of various communication network solutions such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) for communications between measuring instruments and concentrators, and Wide Area Network (WAN) communication systems for remote communications with far-located concentrators, as well as the introduction of an innovative communication network for the scope of smart state estimation.
