    Biographical Sketch

Michele Nitti is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Cagliari, Italy. He received the M.Sc. degree in Telecommunication Engineering (with full marks) in 2009, and the PhD degree in Electronic and Computer Engineering in 2014, with the Doctor Europaeus mention. In 2013, he was a visiting student at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. He served as an Assistant Professor from 2015 before joining his current position, and he holds the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for Full Professor in Telecommunications (ING-INF/03), valid from 17/12/2023 to 17/12/2034.

His research focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT) and next-generation networked systems, with emphasis on social-aware networking, architectures for trustworthy service provisioning, and human-centric intelligent systems grounded in knowledge models and digital twins. Over the years, his work has evolved from foundational contributions on Social IoT and relationship-aware networking towards broader challenges at the intersection of trust, privacy, and user-centric intelligence, including digital twin orchestration across the cloud–edge continuum and knowledge-driven approaches for proactive and adaptive services.

Michele Nitti has led and contributed to several competitive research projects. He has been the Principal Investigator of “Feedback Analysis and blockchain-based trust Evaluation” (FAKE), funded under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme through a cascade funding call (Grant Agreement No. 957228; total budget 175 k€). He is Co-Principal Investigator of the PRIN 2022 project “models and algoriThms fOr 6G Era digital Twin orcHEstratoR” (TOGETHER; total budget 188 k€) and of the PRIN 2022 PNRR project “Metaverse & Human Digital Twin: digital identity, Biometrics and Privacy in the future virtual worlds” (METATwin; total budget 223 k€). He also served as Work Package Leader within the “Cagliari Port 2020” project (WP on logistic modeling and infrastructure development for the Port of Cagliari), funded by the Italian Ministry for Economic Development within the PON Smart Cities and Communities programme (total budget 9 M€).

Beyond academia, he is co-founder of GreenShare Srl, a company operating in info-mobility services, mobile payments, and mobile applications. Among the services developed by GreenShare are Smarticket, TeseoApp, and Clacsoon.

He has actively contributed to the IEEE community through organization and leadership roles. He served as Vertical and Topical Program Chair for the 8th IEEE World Forum on Internet of Things (WF-IoT 2022, Yokohama, Japan), and as General Chair (2021) and Technical Chair (2022) of the IEEE IoT Vertical and Topical Summit for Tourism. He has been invited speaker and keynote speaker at international events on topics related to trustworthy cooperation in IoT and socially enhanced digital twins, and he has served in technical program committees for numerous international conferences.

He is currently an editor for Elsevier Computer Networks, the IEEE Internet of Things Journal, and IoT (MDPI), and Guest Editor for the Special Issue “From Cloud to Edge: Digital Twin Orchestration and Development in the 6G Era” in Elsevier Computer Communications.
