    Seminar title: Energy Monitoring, Storage Control and AI in the Wild: Experiences from a real-world demonstrator

    The European electricity sector is the main stage for several smart-grid projects aimed at demonstrating the many ongoing innovations in real-world settings. However, despite the fact that deploying laboratory prototypes in real-world is technically challenging, reports on real-world experiences are seldom reported in the literature. Therefore, in this talk, we will discuss the challenges and experiences of deploying and maintaining such large-scale real-world demonstrators in the context of a EU funded research project. Special attention will be given to the hardware-software research infrastructures that support the demonstrator life cycle (from data acquisition to actuation/control and end-user interactions/reactions) and the deployment and evaluation of AI models that support different storage control algorithms.

    Bio: Lucas Pereira received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Madeira, Portugal, in 2016. Since then, he is at ITI/LARSyS, where he leads the Further Energy and Environment research Laboratory (FEELab). Since 2019 he is an Assistant Researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Lucas’s research applies data science, machine learning, and human-computer interaction techniques to structured and unstructured data streams to address real-world problems focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His current research focuses on future energy systems, and sustainable built environments (SDGs 7, 11, 12, 13), and typically involves the real-world deployment and evaluation of non-intrusive monitoring technologies and intelligent software systems.
