Research

The Chair aims to promote excellence in research on European climate justice; though among legal scholars climate change has been a topic of vital interest that has generated huge amounts of research and comment, its dimension of a global justice concern, from the perspective of law and international relations has so far been neglected with regard to the institutionalization of protections for global public goods, be it through international treaties, trade-related instruments or networks of public and private actors, and the productive role of international litigation. Research instead is needed to overcome compartmentalized categories embracing an integrated perspective shifting from a discourse on greenhouse gases and melting ice caps into a civil rights movement with the people and communities most vulnerable to climate impacts at its heart: climate justice.

The Chair aims to provide a forum for collaboration institutionalizing some form of cooperation within a European network on climate justice by establishing strong links with other current and past Jean Monnet Chairs in the Mediterranean region (i.e. the ones of Sevilla and Salerno, Barcelona, Valencia) and beyond (with some of the universities whose academics are involved in the summer schools) by relying on previous scientific relationships of the Chair holder and the key staff members established within their academic research paths.
