Carlo Alessandro Locatelli, MD, PhD, is a physician and clinical toxicologist and currently serves as Medical Director of the Pavia Poison Centre – National Toxicology Information Centre at IRCCS Maugeri Foundation Hospital in Pavia, Italy. He has more than 40 years of clinical, academic, and research experience in emergency medicine, intensive care, and clinical toxicology.
Dr. Locatelli earned his medical degree from the University of Pavia and completed specializations in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and in Pharmacology and Toxicology, followed by a PhD in Occupational Medicine and Industrial Hygiene. He holds long-standing teaching appointments as Lecturer in multiple Specialty Schools at the University of Pavia, covering clinical toxicology, emergency medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care, occupational medicine, psychiatry, and paediatrics.
His research activity has focused on the clinical, toxicological, and public health aspects of chemical exposures, drugs of abuse, occupational hazards, and major emergencies. He has coordinated and participated in numerous national and European research projects funded by governmental institutions and public agencies. Since 2010, he has served as national coordinator for the clinical and toxicological components of the Italian National Early Warning System for substances of abuse and as an expert for the “National Fentanyl Plan”.
Dr. Locatelli has authored more than 500 scientific publications, including over 350 indexed papers, and has been an invited speaker at more than 150 national and international conferences. He is the founder and editorial board member of leading Italian journals in emergency medicine and clinical toxicology and regularly serves as a peer reviewer for scientific journals.
He has held major leadership roles in scientific societies, including the Italian Society of Toxicology, where he served as President and currently chairs the Scientific Committee. In addition, he has been extensively involved as an expert advisor for national and international institutions addressing chemical, industrial, environmental, and CBRN risks, contributing to preparedness, training, and response strategies at both national and European levels.
