About Us

Welcome to Hydrochar Network!

Hydrochar Network is a dedicated non-profit organization focused on the promotion and dissemination of knowledge related to the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process. Founded by a group of passionate professionals and environmental advocates, our organization aims to bridge the information gap and foster a deeper understanding of HTC technology and its vast potential.

Our Mission

At Hydrochar Network, our mission is to enhance access to reliable and comprehensive information about HTC. We strive to promote the adoption and advancement of this innovative technology through:

  • Educational Resources: Providing up-to-date and accurate information on HTC processes, benefits, and applications.
  • Community Engagement: Encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing among researchers, industry experts, and the public.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Supporting projects and initiatives that utilize HTC for environmental sustainability and waste management.

What is Hydrothermal Carbonization?

Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) is a sustainable technology that converts organic waste into valuable hydrochar through a process involving high temperature and pressure in a water medium. This technology offers a promising solution for waste management, renewable energy production, and soil enhancement.

Why We Exist

The Hydrochar Network was established to address the growing need for a centralized platform where stakeholders can access and share knowledge about HTC. We believe that through education, collaboration, and innovation, we can unlock the full potential of HTC and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Our Story

Our journey began in 2017, when a group of passionate researchers and industry professionals came together for the first time in London (UK) at the inaugural Symposium on Hydrothermal Carbonization. The success of that event led to the second edition in Berlin (Germany) in 2019, establishing a biennial meeting point for the HTC community.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 symposium was postponed and eventually held in 2023 in Seoul (South Korea). During this memorable event, we also had the opportunity to organize a workshop supported by the OECD, where discussions began on the future of our beloved technology — HTC, of course.

It was on this very occasion that the Hydrochar Network was born — a group united by a common vision. Organized into task groups, we have since met regularly and collaborated to strengthen our network and advance our mission.

In 2025, we gathered once again in New Orleans (LA, USA) for the 4th International Symposium on HTC, where we officially launched the next meeting of our growing community: Cagliari (Italy), 2027 — here we come!
