Workshop – 2nd Workshop on Carbon Stability of Hydrochar

Open Discussion on Carbon Stability and Measurement Protocols

Online, Microsoft Teams | March 3, 2026, 15:30-18:00 pm CET / 9:30-12:00 am EST

Last updated: 25 March 2026

We are pleased to announce the 2nd Workshop dedicated to hydrochar carbon stability, an open and interactive discussion promoted within the Hydrochar Network and open to anyone interested in advancing knowledge on hydrochar behaviour, carbon persistence, and assessment methodologies.

From Discussion to Standardization

The Hydrochar Network initiated this workshop series to progressively structure the scientific dialogue on carbon stability:

  • 1st Workshop (2025): focused on various aspects of carbon stability testing, highlighting methodological diversity, analytical approaches, and current challenges across research groups.
  • 2nd Workshop (2026): dedicated to building a shared standard protocol for testing carbon stability of dried hydrochars under abiotic conditions.

This second edition represents a concrete step toward harmonization and methodological convergence.

Focus of this edition

Co-developing a draft protocol (dry hydrochar – abiotic conditions)

During this workshop, the HTC team will present a draft standard experimental protocol for assessing carbon stability of dried hydrochars under abiotic conditions.

The draft protocol has been developed based on:

  • insights collected during the first workshop, and
  • a critical review of the current scientific literature.

Following registration, participants will receive the draft protocol in advance, allowing them to review it prior to the workshop and come prepared with comments, suggestions, and questions.

The objective of this session is not only to present the draft, but to collectively refine and complete it, moving toward a technically robust and shared methodological framework.

Key Discussion Points

In particular, this session will focus on:

  • which parameters should be measured/assessed to characterize carbon stability on dry hydrochar,
  • how to define minimum vs. recommended measurements,
  • methodological choices (e.g., incubation conditions, analytical workflow, reporting), and
  • key open issues (e.g., reproducibility, inter-lab comparability, reference materials).

The overarching goal is to transition from methodological heterogeneity toward a structured and reproducible testing approach.

Who Should Join

The workshop is open to researchers, PhD students, laboratory technicians, companies, and anyone working (or wishing to work) on hydrochar, HTC, and carbon stability.
The meeting will be informal and discussion-driven, encouraging open exchange of data, ideas, and perspectives.

Participation Details

The workshop will be held online (meeting link provided upon registration).
After registration, participants will receive both the meeting link and the draft experimental protocol.
We strongly encourage participants to review the draft in advance and prepare comments or suggestions to facilitate constructive discussion.
