The Liscate (MI) site of the Greenthesis Group hosts the first industrial‑scale HTC (Hydro‑Thermal Conversion) plant in Italy, developed by Carborem S.r.l. The facility processes municipal and industrial sludge through a high‑temperature, high‑pressure hydrothermal system, achieving more than 50% reduction in the volume of dewatered sludge and a 38–45% increase in biogas production.
The process separates the treated material into a COD‑rich liquid, which enhances anaerobic digestion, and hydrochar, a hydrophobic solid with high dry‑matter content that can be reused as an amendment, fuel or filler. The plant reduces disposal volumes and costs, enables nutrient recovery such as phosphorus, and demonstrates the applicability of HTC technology across multiple sectors, from fertilizers to solid biofuels.
