The HOLMES Project

HOLMES
“Harmonizing Ownership and Legal Measures for Ethical AI Systems”
The HOLMES Project (Harmonizing Ownership and Legal Measures for Ethical AI Systems) is proposed as an interdisciplinary research line within the “Start Up” research projects initiative at the University of Cagliari, to promote research initiatives interdisciplinary that explore themes of transversal importance for the National Research Plan.
The Project, with an interdisciplinary vocation and coordinated by Prof. Massimo Farina, aims to deepen the study in the field of artificial intelligence and copyright, a combination that involves not only legal aspects, but also multiple technological and ethical issues.
Intellectual property represents a significant economic and competitive factor, which requires adequate protection both in the industrial sector but also in terms of copyright for the protection of artistic, literary, advertising and television works, as well as derivative products from the computer.
The production of creations created with the aid of artificial intelligence poses multiple challenges for the correct ethical-legal stability of the system.
Thus, the HOLMES Project aims to achieve these goals:
– Develop innovative models for the protection of intellectual property rights;
– Contribute to the scientific debate on the correct use of creative artificial intelligence systems, through relevant policy tools such as Guidelines and Best Practices for the use of such systems in an ethical and responsible way, with particular regard to the production of creative contents such as works of art, music, literature, film and more;
– Understand the relationships and boundaries between human and artificial intelligence.
