Description

Smart-city inventiveness is rapidly influencing the processes of urban development. This shift and the consequent impact in many areas (population growth, mobility, energy, healthcare, technology, etc.) has motivated public administrators and stakeholders to foresee, plan, and integratethe existing facilities of cities and communities in order to improve individual and collective well-being.
These new ongoing processes aims to facilitate good urban strategies, policies, and short and long-term actions, by triggering a greater economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
Focusing on urban government and smart city inventiveness, this workshop may critically explore (but is not limited) these relevant issues:
1) How to expand the knowledge of the political machinery that is behind the conceptualisation, implementation and development of so-called smart cities.
2) How can we govern current and future urban trends, enhancing the dynamic synergies between the materialand immaterial data of a city (big data, IoT/IoE, sensor networks, blockchain, etc.)
3) How can we govern the urban and regional relationships without compromising urban-land synergies (between the city and the territory), also in term of mobility and of distributive logistics.
4) How to investigate on appropriated governance models and tools in order to trigger virtuous behaviours, suitable in dynamic cities.
5) How and if ‘smart city policies’ have impact on the city and regional economies and make cities competitive at national and international level
6) Reflect on the relations between advance technology (ICT in particular) and human – place relations in to-date urban environment
7) How can we govern the urban and regional relationships between advanced technology and metamorphosis smart city (competitiveness, cohesion, conservation, …)
8) Reflect on the relations between advance technology and the hyper strategic planning in the smart city
Keywords: Smart cities, Smart governance, Open Data, Urban growth, Big Data, IoT/IoE, Distributive Logistics, Intelligent Transport Systems, Sustainability, Hyper Strategic Planning, Competitiveness, Cohesion, Conservation, Urban and Regional Planning.
Each paper will be independently reviewed by 3 programme committee members. Their individual scores will be evaluated by a small sub-committee and result in one of the following final decisions: accepted, or accepted on the condition that suggestions for improvement will be incorporated, or rejected. Notification of this decision will take place on April 2018.
Individuals and groups should submit complete papers (10 to 16 pages).
Accepted contributions will be published in the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) volumes

Smart-city initiatives are rapidly shaping the way urban and regional development is being understood and practiced across the world. Smart-city projects promote the implementation of a number of urban technologies as part of a broader urban trend towards big data, the Internet of Things and sensor networks. However, to date, it is unclear how such urban strategies impact on local environments and societies.

Focusing on urban governance, this session aims to expand the knowledge of the political machinery that is behind the conceptualisation, implementation and development of so-called smart cities. The objective of the session is twofold. We seek papers which critique the governance of current smart-city initiatives, but also studies that can help us reflect on how smart technologies can be used to better govern and develop cities.

More specifically, the session explores how different modes and tools of smart-city governance influence the following (and hitherto overlooked) socio-environmental aspects of smart-city initiatives as they impact on urban development and living:

  • Sustainability
  • Land use
  • Happiness
  • Education
  • Citizens’ behaviours
  • Technology acceptance
  • Urban economy
  • Smart devices/users relationships

Please submit proposals for papers in the form of a 250 word abstract through the Regional Studies Association conference portal by Friday 24th February 2017.
