Santa Gilla – a SENTINEL buoy to monitor lagoon waters and prevent damage from heatwaves and floods

Spoke 9’s efforts are strongly focused on technology transfer to Sardinia’s productive and social sectors.

As of today, thanks to the research team composed of Piero Addis, Antonio Pusceddu, Viviana Pasquini, and Francesco Palmas, producers and operators in the Santa Gilla Lagoon can rely on a system that continuously monitors the water’s physico-chemical parameters, accessible remotely.

The sentinel buoy transmits real-time data, making it available to both the Consortium’s operators and researchers. This enables prompt action when unfavorable environmental conditions arise, such as heatwaves or sudden flooding events.

The deployment of this buoy marks a fundamental step toward the creation of a regional environmental monitoring network that will serve local producers, research groups, and regional authorities.

The Marine Bio-Ecology team is involved in numerous activities within the project, including the study of climate change and invasive species impacts on lagoon fauna, the exploration of new solutions for production diversification using algae and sea urchins, and the development of innovative strategies for sustainable aquaculture.
