Cagliari. New Perspectives for the City Centre

International Workshop co-organised by the School of Architecture University of Cagliari and ETSAB – Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
30 January – 1 February 2023

The Workshop

As a key activity within the ETSAB Thematic Studio “Urban Regeneration and Sustainable Rehabilitation” the joint workshop with the University of Cagliari-UNICA will focus on the potential of the urban and architectural transformation of the central neighbourhoods in the city of Cagliari. Gentrification, vulnerability, and urban resilience are some of the challenges that must be addressed in the upcoming years in the central area of Cagliari, in the context of parallel discussions in other Mediterranean coastal cities, such as Barcelona.

Through fieldtrips, lessons, and conversations with local authorities, associations, and citizens, the workshop will depict what are the main social, ecological, urban, and architectural features of the area and start the discussion on urban design strategies.

Particularly, the workshop will focus on the urban potential for the integration of the historical neighborhoods of Stampace, Castello, Marina, and Villanova among them, and with the modern city. To sum up, the city center of Cagliari offers an opportunity to test contemporary urban strategies to upgrade these areas both preserving the local values (heritage, landscape, citizenship) and infilling new programs and activities.
