“Space & Place 2024” International Workshop

International Workshop on Post-Socialist City

The international workshop on the post-socialist city includes a one-week residential period in Brno, with the participation of around 30 students from the three partner universities, University of Cagliari (Italy), Masaryk University Brno (Czech Republic) and University of Paris Nanterre (France).

The workshop is dedicated to the study of post-socialist context in Brno, with students divided into “mixed” groups and called to carry out an exercise in reading, interpreting and representing the urban post-socialist space seen in relation to the themes of local development, spatial justice and three pillars of sustainable development (economic, social and ecological). Emphasis is placed on the issues of afford housing, ownership relations, adaptation to climate change, facilities of the territory with shops and services and issues of the transport service of the territory.

The objective of the workshop is to grasp the dynamic character of the city, to consider the urban phenomenon as an overlap between different times and different spaces, actors and practices, to recognize the continuous adaptation and modification determined by the multiplicity of uses and subjects that they inhabit and signify the city space.

The objective is study and analyse the case study area, combining different methodologies and approaches, including mapping, survey techniques, photography, audio and video.
