ADVISE Project Antiviral DiscoVery Initiatives: Educating Next-Gen Scientists
Events & News

Events & News

One of the main goals of the project is to involve trainees in a research training network, allowing them to create interactions with academic and corporate colleagues and scientists. This objective will also allow ADVISE to have a broader educational and training impact, as it will be achieved through the organization of relevant scientific events and through participation in high-level workshops and conferences.

Here follows a list of the main events that have been or will be organized by the ADVISE team and/or events attended by ADVISE trainees, as part of their academic and scientific growth.

ADVISE AWARD WINNER – Best doctoral thesis award in the field of Virology assigned to Dr. Giulia Sibille – Award ceremony: 2025 XXXV SIMGBM Congress, University Roma Tre, September 17-20, 2025.

The ADVISE Project, through the SIMGBM – SOCIETÀ ITALIANA DI MICROBIOLOGIA GENERALE E BIOTECNOLOGIE MICROBICHE, awarded Dr. Giulia Sibille with the ADVISE AWARD – Best doctoral thesis in the virology field (dedicated to Doctoral theses discussed in Italian universities during 2024), for the thesis ” ARGETING VIRUSES USING A NOVEL hDHODH INHIBITOR”.
Giulia Sibille is a Research Technician in the Department of Life Sciences and Systems Biology at the University of Turin, Italy. Her research activity focuses on the identification, characterization and validation of broad-spectrum antiviral compounds, aiming to develop effective treatments against DNA and RNA viruses, including Herpes Simplex Viruses, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Influenza Viruses, and Coronaviruses.

The award ceremony will be held during the Congress “SIMGBM – Microbiology 2025” to be held in Rome from 17 to 20 September 2025, where Dr. Giulia Sibille will publicly present the awarded work .

ADVISE final event – Interdisciplinary Insights in Antiviral Research – Mini Symposium on Drug Development & Training on Drugs Data Management, Monserrato/Pula, May 13-16, 2025.

The Workshop “Interdisciplinary Insights in Antiviral Research – Mini Symposium on Drug Development & Training on Drugs Data Management” will be held from May 13th to 16th. It is organized by the University of Cagliari, Department of Life and Environmental Sciences, and by Sardegna Ricerche. Top-level international speakers will bring their experience during the 4 days of research, training and networking.

Exponents from the world of virology, microbiology and bioinformatics, from the Taipei Medical University (Taiwan), the University of Lille (France), the University of Napoli Federico II (Italy), the University of Messina and the Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology – ITMP (Germany), will join the UNICA team coordinated by Prof. Enzo Tramontano, to offer a unique training experience to young researchers and more experienced scholars.
The event is the final moment of the PNRR ADVISE project (Antiviral DiscoVery Initiatives: Educating Next-Gen Scientists), led by UNICA in collaboration with the University of Messina. The Workshop is divided into two parts:
On May 13th and 14th, at the Cittadella Universitaria di Monserrato (Conference Room of Block I) starting at 9 am in which Italian, French and Taiwanese scholars will discuss strategies for drug development. During these two days (dedicated to the Interdisciplinary Insights in Antiviral Research & Mini Symposium on Drug Development) the ADVISE trainees, who during the last 8 months have carried out a case study of antiviral drug development, will have the opportunity to present their results in an international context. The event is open to the public and no registration is required.
On May 15th and 16th, an intense training session (Training on Drugs Data Management) will take place at Sardegna Ricerche in Pula (Science and Technology Park of Sardinia, Building 2) with the participation of experts from the European EU-Openscreen infrastructure and will allow PhD students and young researchers to learn the EU-OS tools, relevant to drug development in the European context. The event will have theoretical sessions and practical sessions full of exercises, for this reason participants will be asked to bring their own portable device. This second phase of the workshop is also open to the public but for organizational reasons due to the limited number of places available, registration is required via the link below.

Participation at IUMS 2024 – International Union of Microbiological Societies. October 23-25, 2024, Florence, Italy.

The ADVISE Project team participated at the IUMS 2024 Conference – International Union of Microbiological Societies. IUMS 2024 brought together medical and non-medical microbiologists from different disciplines around this fundamental theme: “Microorganisms for sustainable solutions: environmental & clinical implementations”.

It was an excellent scenario to improve the growth of ADVISE trainees, since our PNNR project is completely devoted to implement an innovative educational network for these four young undergraduate researchers in the field of drug development.
At the same time, through poster sessions, the ADVISE team presented some insights relating to the research progress carried on within the project.
In particular, as shown in the Photogallery:
Claudia Cabiddu (PhD Cadidate, ADVISE Molecular Virology Team – University of Cagliari) presented the poster “Identification of specific HERV loci differentially expressed in Multiple Sclerosis patients as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets”. (Red-colored poster in the pictures below).
Marianna Camasta (PhD Cadidate, ADVISE Molecular Virology Team – University of Cagliari) presented the poster “Investigating the role of Ebola Virus VP35 wild-type and mutants in the interferon system inhibition”. (Blue-colored poster in the pictures below).

The 7th edition of the IAAASS SummerSchool, organised within the ADVISE Project by Università degli Studi di Cagliari (Prof. Enzo Tramontano) and Sardegna Ricerche, provided an informal and interactive environment to review the application of the most advanced techniques to the identification of novel and clinically-significant antiviral effective agents. The Summer School was targeted to researchers at an early stage in their career, combining examples of drugdiscovery from internationally-recognized experts in the field with informal, small-group thematic discussion sessions.

Highlights:
➡ Participation of more than 60 young researchers and more than 100 people in total;
➡ ADVISE trainees properly involved in a top-level scientific environment;
➡ ADVISE project properly appointed in each relevant phase of the event (flyers distributed to all the participants, project presented by the organizers; the roll-up diplayed behind each speaker appears in each event picture and social post;
➡ International environment targeted to early-stage researchers;
➡ Top-Level presentations of the most advanced methods for the development of novel antiviral agents;
➡ Plenary lectures from internationally-recognized experts in the fields of virology, biochemistry, molecular modeling and medicinal chemistry; ➡ Poster sessions and thematic discussion groups;
